Understanding and Managing PMDD: A Therapist’s Perspective

Updated: Jun 13

Living with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a challenge that extends beyond typical premenstrual symptoms. As both a therapist and someone who has personally navigated the turbulent waters of PMDD, I want to shed light on the reality of this condition and offer hope through therapeutic interventions.

What is PMDD?

PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that affects about 5% of individuals assigned female at birth who are of reproductive age. Unlike PMS, PMDD is characterized by debilitating emotional and physical symptoms that can disrupt daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. Symptoms typically arise in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle (the two weeks before menstruation) and can include:

• Severe mood swings

• Depression or feelings of hopelessness

• Intense irritability or anger

• Anxiety and tension

• Fatigue

• Difficulty concentrating

• Changes in sleep patterns

• Physical symptoms such as bloating, breast tenderness, and headaches

My Personal Journey with PMDD

Living with PMDD has been a rollercoaster of emotions and physical discomforts. I understand firsthand the frustration of feeling misunderstood and the struggle to maintain normalcy amidst the chaos. This personal experience has fueled my passion for helping others through therapeutic methods that can significantly alleviate the impact of PMDD.

The Role of Therapy in Managing PMDD

Therapy can be a powerful tool in managing PMDD. Here are some approaches that have proven effective:

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy can be particularly effective in reducing stress and anxiety, which are common triggers for PMDD symptoms. Through guided relaxation and focused attention, hypnotherapy helps individuals access their subconscious mind to promote positive changes and reduce the severity of symptoms.

Mindfulness and Stress Management

Practising mindfulness and stress management techniques can help in managing the emotional and physical symptoms of PMDD. Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation can reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

Supportive Counseling

Sometimes, having a safe space to talk about the emotional turmoil caused by PMDD can be immensely therapeutic. Supportive counselling offers a non-judgmental environment where individuals can express their feelings and receive empathy and understanding.
